Depth Mandala: The Wisdom of Water & the Unconscious Mind

Today I wanted to share this recent mandala which again is something quite different. It began with a dot as always and I allowed the piece to unfold naturally. In the beginning it was bright orange and swirling with so much detail. One night as I was working on it, I had a very insistent dream of covering it over with a deep blue wash. And so that is what I did. It involved a good deal of trust to simply wash over all of the work I had done! I loved the effect that was made. It feels like looking down into a still pond, down into beautiful depths filled with potential.

The symbolism of water is vast. The meaning of water goes as deep as the deepest sea. From dreams to intuition, magic and mystery, water holds endless inspiration. If you think about it, much of the deepest waters are still unexplored, that makes the meaning of water full of potential. Water also symbolises our subconscious minds. And in the same manner as deep waters, much of our subconscious mind remains hidden and unexplored beneath the surface, yet still holds power over us, our beliefs and our decisions.

Mandala creation and meditation is a profoundly powerful and transformational tool for allowing you to delve into these unexplored waters, bringing what needs to be cleared into the light of awareness. Meditating on this piece certainly brings you to a place of stillness where you are given the space to delve a little deeper into the hidden self. Always mandalas will take you where you are ready to go at your particular stage of the journey.

In Taoist tradition, water is considered an aspect of wisdom. The concept here is that water takes on the form in which it is held and moves in the path of least resistance. Here the symbolic meaning of water speaks of a higher wisdom we may all aspire to. Through embodying the symbol of water, we flow without resistance through our lives. I believe that the more we can heal our subconscious wounds, the more we can purify what lies beneath the surface and we can more readily flow with ease in our lives, just like water. This Mandala I have named Depth and has gone to it's Forever home in Ireland.

This Mandala embodies the feeling of depth. It was a powerful piece to create, working on the detail beneath and then washing over with a deep deep blue. The shapes are organic, playful and seemed to dance beneath the surface of the piece. This mandala was about uncovering the subconscious mind, bringing it's contents to the surface for healing. It is about awakening our innate sense of intuition, our sixth sense which can often be hidden beneath the surface.
