Why I do this?
All of my work, from the artwork, the meditations, the books and to the spaces I hold at workshops has one common thread which is my deepest wish to carve out a space for you to connect to your deeper, higher self. A space for you to find your centre, your stillness and your clarity. To offer to you a space that gives you greater vision and empowerment, connecting you to your deeper self and to a power greater than your self, regardless of your religious beliefs or none. That can be through meditating on an artwork or limited edition print, through doing a meditation or through reading my books or blog posts. It could be coming along to a workshop or retreat. I believe that this held space is hugely important for us in a world that is so fast-paced and often relentless. I offer you spaciousness to yield to a quieter yin experience.
How I began to do this!
In December 2012, I was not sleeping. I was stressed out, losing my temper and basically worrying all day. I was in the midst of going through massive and unexpected changes in life. I was not doing well. Through a mind blowing series of coincidences and synchronicities, I came to discover the art of mandala. To begin with it calmed me. It let me come to a realisation that I could only control what was in my sphere of control and the rest I had to trust. And to be okay with that. I was unaware of the journey that mandalas would lead me on, and it was only after things had settled that I began to research and come to understand what it was that I had been intuitively doing. I spent the next number of years focussing very much on the mandala and found that it brought me so much peace. I resigned from my full time job as a senior librarian in 2018 to become a full time artist, a dream I had always had as a child. I wrote a book called "Who Would You Be If..." a personal development guide for women in 2018 (Red Stag Books). I also opened a gorgeous little studio shop in Marlay Park, Rathfarnham where you can come see my work.
However, again in 2021 I had a very difficult year, losing my mother quite unexpectedly, getting diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer myself three weeks later, and then losing my father two months after that. It was a hugely difficult time as you can imagine. But by having the toolkit of mandala creation and meditation and mindfulness, I was able to navigate the past two years and come out the other side. Obviously our healing journeys are life long, and I continue to process these events and regain my physical strength. I am so very grateful to have had these skills to help me through and I hope that I can help others through them.
Mandalas started me on a massive spiritual awakening, a word that was not in my vocabulary prior to the events of 2012. The journey continues and gets more fascinating with each and every day. Certainly 2021 cemented that journey for me. Even in the most difficult of times, the magic and power that mandalas hold came through, and with that, an even greater realisation that there is so much more to this world and this existence than we might think. I had little glimpses during that time, synchronicities and experiences that were profound...stories for another book perhaps!
Mandalas hold such power, the power to calm, to heal and to connect deeply to the self, yet paradoxically, to something much bigger than ourselves. The mandala becomes a vehicle allowing us to dance with life, to embrace the unknown aspects of self bringing them into awareness. Symbols emerge as if from nowhere, and when these symbols are courted as though they are wild animals in a forest, or an ephemeral dream, the symbols slowly begin to reveal their gold as wisdom. I have found the mandala process to heighten dream activity and for me both are somehow inextricably linked. I sometimes paint my dreams into mandalas or at other times the mandalas will cause dreams.
"After drawing my circles with the compass, I relaxed into a meditative, quiet space and let my hand be guided into creating shapes and choosing the colours. In this stillness, questions, insights arose from a deep place, reminding me of what my heart and soul is really seeking. Since that day, whenever I now look at my Mandala, I am taken back to that place of stillness and centredness. Thank you Patricia for creating that space." Noreen O'Donoghoe, participant at Mandala Workshop at The October Gallery London.
Both the drawing of mandalas or gazing at them prior to meditation brings you deeper into the self and by observing the self deeply we become connected to the infinite nature both within us and without. Having a mandala in your home creates a calm restorative atmosphere where peace and balance can be achieved. All of my work is created intuitively and originals can be purchased for yourself or a loved one. You can also commission a piece which I can create especially for you working with your energy, please mail me at [email protected]
In 2021, I went through extensive breast cancer treatment and have now thankfully come out the other side. It was an experience that was and continues to be a great teacher to me on the importance of gratitude and in being connected to one's body in a very holistic way. I am delighted to be able to now give workshops once again.
Subscribe to my mailing list to receive a mail sharing a Mandala along with the ancient wisdom and learning underlying it, plus I'll keep you updated on any upcoming events. I love social media and connecting with like minded people there, so do join me on Facebook or Instagram.
